Our Review

The service started operating with only 2 servers, but the number quickly increased to 16 in 2008. Today, there are more than 2,000 servers spread across 180 countries, with over 300,000 dedicated IP addresses available.

When you use a VPN, your web traffic travels through an encrypted tunnel to the VPN service’s secure server before heading to the Internet. This means that any bad guys monitoring your network will not be able to see your web traffic or track your movements on the Internet.

The next time you use a public Wi-Fi network, such as your local coffee shop, you may want to activate a VPN to make sure no one is snooping on your browsing.

VPNs protect your privacy, but they can also unblock restricted content. In countries with oppressive Internet policies, activists and journalists use VPNs to bypass their governments’ censorship and thus manage to get in touch with the outside world.

VPNs can also be used to access regionally blocked content, such as the BBC and Netflix streaming services, although many of these companies are starting to take matters into their own hands.

How does PureVPN work?

PureVPN now offers a new and unique feature, the kind we don’t get to see much of from other VPN providers. It’s the virtual router feature, which basically allows you to turn your desktop or laptop into a router that you can use to connect up to ten devices. The only condition is that it must be a Windows computer.

Other interesting features you can enjoy with PureVPN include 256-bit encryption, multiple protocols and automatic protocol selection, over 300,000 IP addresses, a dedicated IP for those who want complete control, NAT firewall, DDoS protection and, of course, an Internet access switch for maximum security, privacy and anonymity.

The most notable features are:

Ad Blocker

PureVPN includes an automatic ad blocker, so when you use it you won’t be tormented by all the online marketing on social networks and other websites.

Split Tunneling

The VPN’s split tunneling feature lets you choose which data you send over your VPN connection and which you don’t. This is great in office environments, for example, where you need to connect to some services using your local IP.

Kill Switch

PureVPN’s automatic kill switch has a specific function: if your connection to the private network is compromised or exposed, it automatically cuts off the supply of data being sent to the servers, to preserve your privacy and anonymity.

Encryption

PureVPN uses 256-bit encryption to protect your data. In addition, the VPN offers DNS, IPV6 and WebRTC leak protection.

Multi logins

With PureVPN you will be able to enjoy a total of 5 connections through the same account, simultaneously and regardless of the device you want to use.

Does PureVPN work with Netflix?

PureVPN is able to connect you to Netflix servers, in theory. Although many times, in practice, it is possible for the servers to reject your connection. Many users complain about this feature specifically. Apparently, many of PureVPN’s servers are not physical, but virtual, and that is perhaps what causes the problem.

However, if you manage to connect to the US servers, the connection is generally decent.

Does PureVPN work with Kodi?

Kodi is a free open-source type service that helps manage our collection of movies, series, music and photos. All content uploaded to the Kodi cloud can then be played via streaming. To maintain a secure connection to the Kodi servers it is common and recommended to use a VPN service.

PureVPN delivers very well in this regard, as it can encrypt the connection and protect your data while using the Kodi servers.

PureVPN and torrents

PureVPN is enabled to work with P2P services such as uTorrent or BitTorrent. In this sense, there should be no problem browsing anonymously and downloading securely from websites such as thepiratebay.com and 1337x.to.

In fact, PureVPN offers a dedicated profile and dedicated servers to ensure that your P2P connection is as fast and secure as possible.

Supported Devices

In addition to providing software for PC, Mac, Android and iOS, PureVPN also provides software for Linux. More than twenty devices are supported, including consoles and routers.

When we tested the Windows app to compare how well it would work versus the Mac version, we found that it is equally excellent and offers nearly the same speeds, along with the same features: NAT firewall, split tunnel, IKS (Internet Kill Switch), and many more.

The iOS and Android apps also work well compared to their desktop counterparts.

You can use a total of 5 devices with the same PureVPN account, simultaneously.

PureVPN extension

PureVPN can also be downloaded as a browser add-on, available for Chrome and Firefox, and a version for Opera currently in beta.

Installing the extension on Chrome is easy, as it is listed in the official add-on store. Firefox users, on the other hand, are not so lucky and have to follow some instructions to get it working.

How to install PureVPN?

  1. An account is automatically created for you after purchasing a PureVPN subscription. First you need to select the duration you want to sign up for, select how you will pay and issue the payment.
  2. Shortly thereafter, you will receive an email with your account and your VPN login credentials. When you visit the members area for the first time, you will be presented with material of interest describing what to download and how to configure your devices.
  3. Go to the applications page and download the client.
  4. Double-click on the icon, follow the instructions and let it install.
  5. The client will configure a couple of things automatically. This configuration occurs by default on devices running Windows only, other operating systems require user cooperation for effective configuration.
  6. Once installed, log in with the credentials you received after purchasing the membership.
  7. You will be guided through a quick configuration where you will need to fine-tune the final details according to your requirements.
  8. Finally, select a country (VPN) and wait for the connection to be established.
  9. When a window appears with the message “Your real IP is now hidden”, you are now connected through PureVPN.

List of PureVPN servers

One important thing to keep in mind is this: the more servers a VPN has, the more bandwidth is available to each user on each server. Also, the more server locations there are, the more likely you are to find a fast and reliable connection. Numerous server locations also means more options for spoofing your location.

PureVPN currently offers users about 2,000 servers in 140 countries in 180 different locations. The list includes servers in Africa, Asia, Australia, Central America, Europe, North America and South America. In fact, it offers some of the best geographic diversity I’ve seen among VPN companies.

But not everything is necessarily as it seems. PureVPN has 54 physical servers and the rest are virtual locations. A virtual server is a software-defined server. Basically, a physical server running multiple virtual servers that can be configured in different ways, including appearing to be in a different country than where you actually are.

Virtual servers can be a problem if you want to know exactly which countries are handling your data. That’s difficult with PureVPN.

The list of servers goes as follows:

  • North America: 667 servers.
  • Europe: 807 servers.
  • South America: 84 servers.
  • Africa: 150 servers.
  • Central America: 12 servers.
  • Asia: 321 servers.
  • Oceania: 93 servers.

Note: The closer you are to a server, the faster your connection will be.

Pricing

Like any other VPN provider, PureVPN offers a single package. Discounts increase as you opt for longer subscription periods.

PureVPN offers a 31-day money-back guarantee in case you are not satisfied with the service. A while ago, however, the refund policy was only valid if you hadn’t used more than 3 GB of bandwidth and hadn’t exceeded 100 VPN connection sessions.

Apparently they have changed the policies and now give you the refund without further ado. As long as you are within 31 days of the purchase date, you can receive your refund by sending an email to help@purevpn.com with your username and the reason for your request.

Prices go like this:

  • $10.95 for a one-month subscription
  • $3.33 per month for a 12-month subscription, and;
  • $2.88 per month if you decide to subscribe for 2 years.

Although the cost of the six-month subscription is more than reasonable, the 2-year subscription price definitely places PureVPN among the cheapest VPN providers.

Is it possible to get PureVPN for free?

Unfortunately, you can’t get a free version. If you want to try PureVPN you will have to pay its cost to get it and if you are not satisfied, you can appeal to the money-back guarantee.

On the other hand, you can download a 3-day trial version at a cost of $2.50. This trial version is non-refundable.

Speed and Performance

During our PureVPN analysis, we measured speed while connected to a local server and to several servers in the United States and other regions. The usual assumption is that connection times to a local server are faster, since data has to travel less distance.

Our speed before connecting to PureVPN was 9.85 Mbps download, 4.67 Mbps upload, with a ping of 30 ms.

When we connected to the PureVPN server in the United States, the download speed dropped slightly to 9.23 Mbps, and the upload speed dropped to 3.98 Mbps. The ping increased to 92 ms.

However, when we connected to a server in Australia, the download speed dropped to 2.96 Mbps. The upload speed decreased slightly to 3.56 Mbps, and the ping increased to 425 ms. A connection that does not allow streaming in high quality, and is also very slow for gaming. It could only be used for surfing the Internet for non-demanding things.

Security and privacy

PureVPN is based in Hong Kong, which, despite being ruled by China, enjoys some of the freest and most uncensored internet access in the world.

VPN providers in Hong Kong are not required to maintain any logs. Until recently, PureVPN maintained extensive connection logs that were used to help the FBI catch criminals. PureVPN issued a statement releasing some updates to its privacy policy and is now “officially a log-free VPN.”

A “minimal set of data” is required to help you with technical assistance, troubleshoot connection issues and overcome region-specific problems, but the IP address you connect from, the IP of the VPN server you connect to and the timestamp at which connections happen “are not saved.”

Security Protocols

PureVPN uses the following protocols:

Data channel: an AES-256-CBC cipher with HMAC SHA1 hash authentication.

Control channel: an AES-256-CBC cipher with RSA-2048 encryption and HHAC SHA384 authentication.

This is a positive configuration that matches the minimum security criteria.

Customer Support

PureVPN has a 24/7 live chat to address any customer needs. Despite being friendly, respectful and diligent to respond to the best of their ability, they don’t always manage to help with technical issues and quick solutions are often not found.

More in-depth issues are not answered via live chat, but are passed on to another department who gets in touch via email, which takes longer than one would expect. And again, they fail to efficiently resolve the more technical issues.

Usually, they ask you to remove PureVPN from the device and re-download/install it. But this usually doesn’t fix the problems.

Conclusion

PureVPN is a relatively inexpensive option, especially in the long term, suitable for browsing simple, blocked sites. Speeds are not good, so accessing media streaming sites, such as Netflix or Kodi, may not be the best use case for the service.

VPN is suitable for beginners, so casual users also have a great alternative on this platform. There are guides for pretty much everything and the few things not documented are handled diligently by the support team, when they are not very technical.

PureVPN is a fantastic VPN service… in theory. The long-term subscription plans make it cheaper than most. It has a lot of basic and advanced security features. However, the company’s previous lack of transparency is a major concern. Connection logging can be an issue for some.

Overall, PureVPN does its job well, though it does not exempt in any respect. Our rating for PureVPN is 6, on a scale of 10.

What stats we measured with PureVPN and why?

Choosing a VPN is never easy, especially when you are a beginner who is about to purchase their very first plan. There are so many providers to choose from!

Based on longterm testing, average download speed when using PureVPN is 105 Mbit/s. Currently, the size of their network is around 2000 servers.

The size of the server network is an important factor as it determines a global availability of the VPN. The bigger the network is, the more reliable the service can be.

The download speed is very important too, especially in today's fast-paced world. If your VPN speed is too slow, many websites or streaming services may not work or the experience will definitely be less comfortable.
